If you have any lightbox plugin installed, you can use cool effects:
This option lets you display only first photo of gallery, and the rest will be displayed in lightbox gallery.
I tested with responsive lightbox (http://wordpress.org/plugins/responsive-lightbox/)

turn on

Effects set above can be applied to a classic-looking galleries based on a typical grid.
Just set this parameter to “no”. Then, the plugin will ignore defined pattern and use typical grid.
Just set to “yes” to turn on your pattern.
This solution allows you to test two kind of gallery quickly without resetting patterns.

patterns

You have 88 options available, so you can set 10 customized rows of your gallery layout. You do not have to use all 10 rows. Plugin will repeat them from beginning if your gallery has more photos. Take a look at examples to see how it works.

save it as new preset

If the prepared presets are not satisfactory, experiment with your own pattern lines and save them as your own preset – naming it whetever you like. There is a possibility to create new customized preset directly when creating a new gallery.

Manage the presets

However, you can also manage the presets in the plugin settings: in WordPress go to Plugins -> Installed plugins -> GOCHA Focuson Parallax and click on Settings or on left menu Settings -> GOCHA Focuson Parallax.

This path is more user-transparent, as you have a preview of how your potential gallery will look like. Note that you do not need to fill in all 10 lines – the scheme will loop from the beginning of the defined ones.
In settings you can also edit standard and custom presets, as well as delete them if needed.

This is how the main settings of the plugin looks like. If you want to edit the preset, click on the pencil icon.

When editing the preset, you will see the following screen:
